What is acupuncture?

The practice of acupuncture is based on principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory which has a 5,000 year history of successfully diagnosing, treating and preventing illness. Acupuncture involves inserting sterile, disposable needles at specific points in specific patterns, and using these needles to stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal. No substance is injected into the body. If appropriate, acupuncture will be combined with Chinese herbology and other methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

How does acupuncture work?

We all have a complex system of channels (called meridians) which flow throughout our body distributing energy to nourish every cell, tissue, muscle, tendon and organ. Health problems arise when there is an obstruction in the flow of this life force or an imbalance in the bipolar components of this flow. Much like a dam blocks the flow of water in a river, physical trauma, over exertion, emotional stress, poor eating habits etc… hinders the flow of Qi traveling through the meridian pathways. When this occurs Qi becomes blocked and cannot freely circulate and your heath becomes compromised. This can cause a variety of symptoms and signs including pain, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, digestive troubles to name but a few. Acupuncture restores the energetic balance in the body and stimulates the healing process. By nourishing, strengthening and supporting the body, acupuncture can help you achieve optimum health.

Is it safe?

Acupuncture is very safe and there are virtually no adverse effects or complications when practiced by a qualified Registered Acupuncturist. Needles used for acupuncture are fine, sterile, disposable, single use, stainless steel implements. Electrical Stimulation (electroacupuncture) should be used with caution for patients who have pacemakers or epilepsy. Women in early pregnancy and hemophiliacs are treated with caution.

Is acupuncture reimbursed?

Even though acupuncture is not covered by Alberta Health Care, it is accepted by most Employee Health Benefit Plans and most supplemental health care plans. Please check with your provider.

Acupuncture treatments can also be claimed as medical expenses if you are self-employed.
